A big limitation of Notion AI Search (and the workaround)

While Notion’s AI Search is very powerful, it has a big limitation – you cannot do hyper-relevant search over long documents.

What is hyper relevant search?

Suppose you upload the transcripts of a few videos from a YouTube playlist to a single folder in ChatPDF, you can ask questions over the entire folder.

The response will link to the specific page in the PDF file – in other words, you can jump to that specific location in the video and start watching from there.

Clicking the link jumps directly to the specific page

I will refer to this as hyper relevant search.

Notion AI does not provide hyper relevant search

I tried something similar using Notion AI.

While it can locate the correct document and even correctly summarize the correct section, there is no way to jump to the specific location in Notion AI.

Clicking on the link opens the document but cannot jump to a specific location in the document

This means while it can still give you a good summary, Notion AI Search does not provide a good “citation”

The workaround

One way to work around this is to split the transcript into multiple segments, and create one document per segment inside Notion. This would force Notion AI Search to link to the specific segment.

Another option is to create a database inside Notion and add the relevant segment of the transcript as the page “content” for each row. This would also allow you to do some more advanced stuff like autogenerate a 5 bullet point summary for each transcript segment so you can quickly browse the video content for review and recall.

I explain how to do this in my Agentic AI for Non Programmers course (first chapter)
