I have created a small eBook to explain the differences between Dialogflow and RASA NLU if you are trying to choose one or the other.
The eBook was based on Dialogflow ES.
Since the introduction of Dialogflow CX, it is fair to say that RASA NLU and Dialogflow have diverged into entirely different directions. That is, they are even less comparable now because of the state machine based approach used in Dialogflow CX. In addition (to the best of my knowledge), most of the new Dialogflow features are only going into CX and not into ES, and RASA has also evolved quite a bit but in different directions.
I also don’t have the bandwidth to keep track of all the changes in these two entirely divergent bot frameworks at the moment. As a result, I don’t consider this eBook a good comparison anymore and I have removed it.
But I will add a few things to consider if you are technical but not a programmer:
Where Dialogflow ES is already better than RASA NLU
There is an easy-to-use visual dialog manager in Dialogflow ES
You can do a lot of stuff within the graphical user interface before writing a single line of code. For example check out my step by step Dialogflow guide for non-programmers. You can go through about 70% of the course before you reach the section about webhooks
In my (obviously biased) opinion, Dialogflow is the best low code chatbot framework
You can use a spreadsheet to define FAQ bots and generate the bot with a single click using BotFlo
You don’t really need to understand how NLU works to be able to create complex conversations in Dialogflow
You can build a conversation flowchart and quickly convert it into a Dialogflow chatbot. To the best of my knowledge, this is practically impossible for non-developers to do in RASA NLU.
The recently released Zoho SalesIQ v2 allows non-programmers to build chatbots using an easy-to-use code less bot builder. What is really unique about Zoho SalesIQ is the fact that you can also integrate AI into their code less bot builder. In my Zoho SalesIQ chatbots course, I explain how to use Zoho SalesIQ to add a chatbot to your website.
"The magic key I needed as a non-programmer" The custom payload generator was the magic key I needed (as a non-programmer) to build a good demo with rich responses in DialogFlow Messenger. I've only used it for 30 minutes and am thrilled. I've spent hours trying to figure out some of the intricacies of DialogFlow on my own. Over and over, I kept coming back to Aravind's tutorials available on-line. I trust the other functionalities I learn to use in the app will save me additional time and heartburn. - Kathleen R Cofounder, gathrHealth
